1964: nine ordinary humans from different parts of the world are abducted and transformed into cyborgs in order to be used as weapons. Then in 2013, skyscrapers across the world are hit by suicide bombers, and the nine gather once more to fight an unknown foe. The cyborgs seem to be untouched by the intervening years, but the world around them has changed dramatically – as has the very idea of justice.

Caught up in the fire bombing of Kobe in 1945, Seita and his little sister Setsuko lose their mother and their home. Unable to contact their father on the front line, they flee to the country, stealing or begging for food. The societal breakdown that inevitably followed the razing of the cities means they are left truly alone to fend for themselves.
Undeniably very sad but stunningly rendered, this is a brave animation that does not flinch from the true human tragedy of war.
